42' and 50' Cruising Sailboat Designs

Bowsprit-rigged Sloop Yacht

The design of this hull and the upwind working mechanism incorporated into this hull work hand in hand to allow a prominent bowsprit. The sprit allows for much enlarged standard and light-wind sail plans.

The wide-beamed hull has a tendency to turn the boat into the wind. This tendency is counteracted by the more forward located center of sail effort on the sprit-rigged sloop that has a tendency to turn the boat off wind.

If there is a residual tendency to sway the boat one way or the other, it is easily corrected by the upwind-working mechanism.

The upwind working mechanism makes it very easy to balance the boat in any wind condition and at any angle to the wind so that minimal rudder actions are necessary.

It can also compensate for drift on any course.

Also, in tacking upwind it can work the boat upwind at a much steeper angle of attack than before thought possible, making it much faster in working upwind.

If a long run straight before the wind is necessary, this mechanism allows the boat to sail, a little off the down-wind heading, thus steadying the sails and increasing the effort of the sails while still following the down-wind course.

This mechanism works equally well on the bowsprit-rigged ketch hull and, really, is a great advantage on the 42 and the 50.5 ft hulls no matter how they are rigged. It is a great way to prevent drift.

Nothing comes even close to owning a well-designed, wood-constructed, cruising sailboat.
